Spiritual Communicative Theory of 無法而法 (mubup-yibup):

- Art world <emptiness is everything, and everything is emptiness>-

Mr. Park Jun-soo's Art World

Written by Ph.D and Art Critic Mr. Chang Jun-seok

1.

The artist Park has exerted himself in his art world with work and practical technique. He is interested in Spiritual Communicative Theory, and has completely his art work which is based on ranging from human's personality and character to indefinable yearnings. He enrolled a doctor course in Dankook university to complete his theory "emptiness is everything and everything is emptiness." thanks to Mr. Wang Hyung-yul who is a spiritual mentor and professor in the comtemporary art.

This epitome shows everything in his inside world ; a whole art of work and theory, a point of view.

Park tried to connect his spiritual communicative theory with more concrete art of work after majoring in Korean fine arts in undergraduate and graduate courses. He has been doing in his work with a highly professional and exclusive one on a basis of Koh gae-jee (an ancient chinese artist)'s theory.

It can be classified with two different aspects judging from his work ;

Period I, 1992 ~ 2001 : perspective and actual aspect

period II, 2002~at present : spiritual and calligraphic aspect

Emphasizing spiritual facts, he has tried to describe something different during these two periods. During the first period, he made an effort to express emptiness and loneliness in real life. On the contrary, he developed his work for spiritual and perspective facts. His art world under name of b-yu-b-gong (emptiness is everything, and everything is emptiness.) He tried to show an abstracted and real art of work simultaneously in the 2nd period, and to express half-phased human mixed with spiritual mind and half-abstracted flower in space. He introduced a part of emptiness and truth in frame with all his might.

We can easily feel his recent work goes into more specific real features.

2.

As you can see, his work before 2002 is based on a real feature. This is, of course, a stepping stone to his another distinctive world. He painted symbolic features instead of simple and real perspective, and delivered an image of spirit linked with b-yu-b-gong. That means he has chosen his art of work from a real phase to artistic and spiritual phase. After 2002, a series of b-yu-b-gong appeared maximizing spiritual features. The artist, Park let us introduce how important they are in the universe. Judging from his art of work, he never finished it without any experience, and seemed to approach a lot of spiritual world, and completed full of self-consciousness and transparent truth with theoretical frame.

He burned the midnight oil to study oriental arts and philosophy in a Ph.D course, and tried to apply it to the work. It is needless to say such kind of work must be tough. Park might be exhausted to prove it theoretically and physically. As a matter fact, there have been fewer artists like Park.

He learned many useful things from the professor Wang Hyung-ryul who's been helping with his treatise. This absolutely made him complete wonderful art of works, because prof. Wang is a great performer of spiritual arts. (Most of Wang's arts are shown as the union of nature and human, he has been using an image of birds to express something spiritually and meaningfully in space.). This is a kind of successful to lead a spiritual art world, and Park played a great role to seek for Korean identity.

He said, "Therefore, I would like to prove a series of b-yu-b-gong spiritually so as to discover getaway arts, modern identity in my treatise. I went way back to the middle and later period of Ching Dynasty in China and Lee Dynasty in Korea at that time when there is a turning point between oriental arts and western arts, and I need an answer for spiritual communicative theory in the field of Buddhism, Confucius, Meditation."

Park tried to come closer to an ancient artist Seok-Do's theory which is focused on orientalism to link with the spiritual communicative theory, and to challenge Korean modern arts which is almost getting away from orientalism. He seemed to use paintbrushes calligraphically to indicate spiritual communicative and lawful and unlawful theories. What he painted is not care who you are and where you are from. For example, To blush for a woman calligraphically is to simplify his painting. It is very interesting for us he is trying to call it as b-yu-b-gong.

3.

His attempt with lawful and unlawful theories is quite new in the middle of old fashioned Korean arts.

It comes from Koh Gae-jee's spiritual communicative theory in the Wi and Jin Dynasty in China. The theory influenced on various oriental theories, for instance, Jong Byung's Chang Seen theory and Seen Myung theory, etc and Sa Hyunk's Six Commandments, and thereafter it has been a corner-stone for So Sik's Sang Lee, Lee Gong-ryn's Baek Myo (White cat), Hyung Ho's Youk You, and other artistic principles. Artistic spiritual communication is a sign of energy, that is to say, a combination of energy and rhyme. A combination of energy and rhyme is same as a relationship of lawful and unlawful one, and it includes a highly esteemed. It is essential to create Korean Identity in these days.

His thesis for a doctorate and art exhibition coming at us must be a landmark, and It is a fresh start to make a major upgrade and also to reflect popular opinion in Korea. His theory must go to Yu sik theory(inevitable relationship between spirit and material)in Buddhism. His ultimate goal is to control human's mind and to describe what you saw and what you felt spiritually. To contact something with no greed spiritually, we have to control our mind in peace, because Yu sik theory might be leading us in the wrong way. Koh Gae-jee's theory is shown ; Energy to be united with feature and truth. In other words, Koh Gae-Jee's theory might not be consistent with Yu sik theory in Buddhism, just like water mixed with oil.

As I said to you, Park has been looking for something to modernize based on old spiritual phase. I'd rather say it is necessary to improve our poor modern arts, and how wonderful he has tried to change

something with Koh Gae-jee's theory. But more important thing is how he works. This is difficult to say because he cannot complete his works without thoughtful and careful attention for objects, and he should work and slave with his effort and skill to find what he wants exactly.

4.

The painter who is trying to know essence of art is way off base in Korean Art boundary. However he is a great artist brushing his world comparing with others in foreign countries, and will be a role model to introduce his fabulous Korean spiritual communicative arts. In fact, some critics appreciated his work "b-yu-b-gong." and praised him to be a highly skilled artist. He could approach a lot of experiments and express deep in space, essence on object in his works, and he should thank prof. Wang for giving him energy and discipline. I trust this will be steady and fruitful. No doubt he will create lively arts with intact nature. See his line works, flowers, and human from painting brushes. Those seem to mingle in many ways and dance in space. How wonderful! Metaphorical images are here and there in unexplainable space. In cruel and greedy society, he tries to let go without any complaints, and he takes destiny and paints as b-yu-b-gong.

In his exhibition, "spiritual communicative theory" is a good mixer with his "b-yu-b-gong." as a unity.

The b-yu-b-gong shows a fantastic combination of flowers and human. He tried to impress weather-stricken human and flowers which means women symbol. He angled our life and agony in his painting, and looked for a truth of life. He seemed to struggle with human spiritual source in his inner world.

In the course of his doctorate, he brushed and transferred freely, from concrete feature to human image in modern society. As time goes by, he used everything effectively in his palette. How did he use his brush? Depth, speed, draw and slip!

What're he trying to express? Silhouette and dance, sophisticated feature and line work. It is what he has worked for so long.

So to speak, his spiritual communicative world. You can't miss it!

It might be mythological feeling and unknown phase and color in his painting, right this moment.

In the world of truth mixed with vanity, empty and etc, his exhibition will give us a better opportunity to understand our life and soul, and it should be a guidepost to study "new approach of spiritual communicative arts" in Korean westernized contemporary art.
